The Spanish Club Constitution

Article I – Name

The name of this organization shall be the Organización de la Lengua Española (OLÉ) of Oakwood College.

Article II – Purpose

The club's purpose is to establish an atmosphere at Oakwood College in which students may freely communicate using the Spanish language; exposing Beginning/Intermediate Spanish students to the conversation environment, and serving as an open door to Oakwood College for the Spanish-speaking community. By ministering to and interacting with today’s Spanish-speaking community, we hope that our contacts will make up a recognized sector of the Oakwood College student body of tomorrow.

Article III – Membership

Section 1: Any student regularly enrolled at Oakwood College may become a member of the club with voting and office-holding privileges. An individual becomes a member after (1) satisfactorily completing the club’s application, (2) passing a basic Spanish knowledge interview, hereafter called the Entrance Interview, and (3) paying all applicable dues. Any member of the Executive Committee may host an Entrance Interview. Members should attend at least 3 meetings per month. If a member cannot attend a regularly-scheduled or special meeting, he must inform the Secretary of his/her planned absence prior to the meeting missed. Participating members must attend the last meeting before any event to be able to participate in the event.

Section 2: Dues, having been decided on by the club as $20 per semester, shall be paid by members only. Members must have a minimum GPA of 2.00. Officers must have a minimum GPA of 2.50.

Article IV – Executive Officers

The executive officers of the club shall be as follows: President, Vice-president, Secretary, and Treasurer. The executive officers shall serve for a term of one school year. The aforementioned officers shall constitute the Executive Committee.

Article V- Duties

President’s responsibilities include: Presiding over all meetings, appointing all committees, approving the expenditure of budgeted funds, arranging club transportation, supervising the club calender of events, and presenting a report to the membership at the end of each semester.

Vice President’s responsibilities include: Assuming the duties of the President in the absence or incapacity of the President, being a member of every committee, being in charge of any special functions or activities the club may undertake, and supervising public relations of the club (especially church-club relations).

Secretary’s responsibilities include: Maintaining the membership applications on file, recording the minutes of all meetings, issuing any necessary correspondence, and contacting the members to announce any club meetings.

Treasurer’s responsibilities include: Issuing checks for the expenditures of all budgeted funds upon receiving proper billing, receiving all monies of business transactions, taking active part in preparing the financial aspect of the President’s end-of-semester report.

Pastor’s responsibilities include: Planning the worship sessions at the beginning of each club meeting, contacting and supporting the speakers for Divine Worship services, and watching over the spirituality of club ministries.

Article VI – Elections

Election of officers shall take place yearly during the fourth week of April. The Executive Committee shall appoint a nominating committee consisting of students, preferably older members selected from the membership; and the outgoing President, ex-officio, shall serve as Chairman of the Committee. He may also serve a second term if elected. Any student member is eligible for nomination as an officer of the Executive Committee who (a) meets the college’s eligibility for student office-holding which consists of a 2.0 average; and (b) fulfills the qualifications as set up by the Executive Committee.

Article VII – Amendments

Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed to the voting membership by a majority vote of the Executive Committee or by petition signed by 1/10 of the voting membership. Amendments shall be declared adopted which are presented at 2 general meetings and receive a majority favorable vote at both meetings by the voting members present.

Article VIII – By-laws

By-laws, not inconsistent with this constitution, may be adopted or amended by 2/3 vote of the regular members present at any regular or special meetings, providing the By-laws are submitted in writing at least one week previously at either a regular meeting or special meeting of the general membership.
